a ****tion of this study out of context I would appreciate it if you added
a
link back to this study, because the numbers in isolation are very easy to
misinterpret if you don't have the whole story
WAR MAGIC/AR/PHANTOM: I said it below, but for those who can't read more
than one paragraph, for these types of weapons DoT is HIGHLY armor
dependent
and it is a mistake to pick one level of war/AR/etc and assume it applies
to
everything. AR weapons work well on mid-high armor level mobs, but CS and
CB
weapons totally own them on lightly armored mobs. Crystal golems
demonstrate
this, but there are other examples too. Note also that a mage who can land
can kill most anything in 8-12 seconds (2-3 spells) and increasing damage
for a bolt only ****fts the health bar of the "one shot" or "two shot"
kills
up a little. Mages may need a boost, but if they get one, it might be more
useful if it was speed oriented rather than power oriented.
This study is very long and shows the effects as you progress in levels,
looking at 5 im****tant ranges. 30s, when you first start using the 250
base
weapons. 50s, with midrange weapons. 80s when 325/290 base weapons are
freely available. 110+ where a startling number of people are these days
and
"max" which is +190 to relevant stats, +226 to UA skill, base 400 melee or
360 missile skill for imbued weapons, level 7 buffs and major cantrips
where
they help. The difference between 30s and "max" was boosted from about 50%
to 150% as a result of tinkers and imbues. Level differences mean a lot
more
than they did pre-imbues.
When considering these results, remember that Excellent tinkered weapons
are
still very rare, and most people have to make do with Typical, especially
if
looking at all damage types.
I'm going to let the numbers speak for themselves for the most part.
PLEASE
read the section on how armor level affects certain weapons and REALLY
PLEASE read the war magic discussion before looking at the numbers. There
is
more to real-world performance than theoretical DoT.
Some interesting results I will point out.
1. Level matters now
2. Equipment matters more than level
3. The only quest weapons worth a damn are the bandit dagger (and only
because imbued daggers suck relative to staff) and Slayer Weapons vs their
intended target and using correct damage type. (****mmering melee weapons
are
trash. ****mmering missile weapons are pretty damn good). Some quest
(x)bows
are as good or slightly better than unimbued (x)bows, but adding an imbue
blows them all out of the water for general use.
4. All physical weapons are pretty much where they should be, except axe
is
slightly better than mace because of the Granite improvements, and Dagger
trails staff by way too much. Dagger needs unhiltable heavy daggers with
damage ranges similar to staff.
5. Rules of thumb for hollows PvP: UA, Sword, Spear, Mace, Axe, Staff,
Dagger. Axe would be higher, but most hollow armor is 1.2 to slash, and
GSA
bottoms are .8 vs pierce. This ranking also takes into account the various
unbuffable weapon speeds, and assumes low power. On high power, the slower
weapons do better.
8. Phantom weapons are UA/Sword, Axe, Mace, Spear, Dagger, Staff. UA is
better than it should be, right about at Sword level, even though the
phantom katar has 100% variance, no base damage and gets only half the
usual
UA skill bonus to damage
9. Weapon damage has more than doubled from 2001 levels, once you get high
enough level that the imbues kick in.
METHOD:
All imbue properties are based on BASE weapon skill and have hard ranges.
Below 160 for melee or 120 for missile, an imbued weapon behves like an
unimbued weapon. Above 400 for melee and 360 for missile an imbued weapon
behaves like the user has 400 or 360 base skill.
DoT =(max dmg)*((1-crit chance)*(2-variance)/2 + (crit chance)*(crit
multiplier))*(coord/str mod)*(power or bow mod)*(rate-of-fire)*(armor
factor)*(slayer property)
max dmg = weapon max+blooddrinker+UA mod Ua mod = skill/20, considering
only
true skill, not any Heartseeker or weapon mods (UA/10 for phantom katar)
crit chance=0.10 for most weapons, (Base Skill - 100)/600 for CS melee,
(Base Skill - 60)/600 for CS missile
crit multiplier=2 for most weapons (some old-school quest weapons had
higher), (Base Skill - 40)/60 for melee weapons, (Base Skill)/60 for
missile
weapons
coord/str mod = 1+(Stat-55)*.008 UA, Bow, Xbow, TW and 1+(Stat-55)*.011
for
other weapons. Bow, Xbow and Dagger use Coordination, Thrown Weapons and
all
other melee weapons use Strength.
Bow mod = (100+bow/xbow/alatl mod)/100 Power mod = 1.5 for most weapons
(.5
is used for hollow and phantom melee weapons)
Armor Factor. This is going to be somewhat controversial but I believe I
have it right. The true armor equation is: Armor Modifier = 1 / ( 1 +
Armor
Level / (200 / 3) ) . Rather than try to reduce DoT for armor, I've
increased the "effective" DoT for weapons that ignore all or some part of
armor by the amount the armor would have reduced the damage. Ie, if armor
would have halved the damage, a phantom weapon gets DoT doubled. The Armor
factor in the tables below is 1 for a normal weapon, ( 1 + Armor Level /
(200 / 3) ) for phantom or war, and ((( 1 + Armor Level / (200 / 3) ) /( 1
+
(Armor Level*(AR factor) / (200 / 3) ) ) for AR weapons, where AR factor
is
(Base Skill - 160)/400 for melee and (Base Skill - 120)/400 for missile
Slayer factor. I made a lot of assumptions on this one but I think the
results are fairly close to reality. After receiving dev confirmation that
slayer weapons are skill based, like any other imbue, I assumed the same
hard caps (160/400 and 120/360) and took some field measurements. I
believe
the slayer equation is 1+(base skill-160)*(slayer multiplier)/240 for
melee
and 1+(base skill-120)*(slayer multiplier)/240 for missile. Slayer
multiplier varies from weapon to weapon. I believe that the Olthoi Slayer
property on Gaerlan quest weapons is near .72 and Perfect Isp Weapon vs
correct elemental has a factor of close to 1.71. But I caution that the
equations and factors in this study are approximate, based on very few
data
points
Rate of Fire was measured carefully. Todd from Turbine revealed some
numbers
and as they were within the margin of error, I modified my observed
multistrike numbers slightly to match Turbine's official measurements.
Xbow/Bow, UA and pierce windup measurements are mine...oddly triplestrike
pierce is considerably slower than triplestrike slash animation. This is
not
true of doublestrike. Low speed UA measurements were taken from a very
nice
Warrior Stop test, at my request. I believe the person doing it found a
way
to strip lag from the equation, in a way I could not testing outside. War
measurements were done by an independent person, showing that in the field
it is a touch slower than the theoretical 3.75 seconds/level 5-7 spell.
Weapons of all cl***** were measured, with SK7 applied and 215 quick.
Dagger
with 20 speed and no SK7 was also tested and was no different than the SK7
test. Conclusion is that weapon type other than UA had no effect on
animation and using SK to lower a weapon "below" zero had no effect. One
person managed to repeatably raise the rate of fire of a 120 speed xbow
from
21 to 22 by adding oak (-50) and SK7 (-70). Adding SK alone never showed
any
observable effect within a minute except at high speed/low accuracy
firing,
where you might gain a shot or two per minute
Rate of fire for MELEE weapons. assumes a zero speed weapon, and the owner
has at least 180 quick. Some weapons can not be brought down to zero
speed.
I did my best to measure RoF for these weapons at different quicknesses
and
these reductions are included in the DoT. In general, it takes about 20
points extra quick over 180 to "zero" 10 points of weapon speed. Weapon
speed differences are not hugely significant at high power (20 speed = 32
hits per minute instead of 33, 60 speed = 29 hits/minute) but at low power
it is much more noticable (20 speed = 90% of the hits, 60 speed = 5/8 of
the
hits). It takes about 260 quick to "zero" a 40 speed weapon, about 300 to
"zero" a 60 speed weapon....which is as bad as it gets, even for something
like a fang mace.
Rate of fire for MISSILE weapons assumes max accuracy. Many mobs must be
fought at max accuracy, even at high levels. If an archer CAN lower his
accuracy bar, he fires about 20% faster at 3/4 accuracy, 50% faster at 1/2
accuracy. Archers don't hit reliably below 50% accuracy except when
shooting
Isperians without missile D. In the rare "machinegun" situation, archers
shoot a touch below 100% faster.
Unbuffable weapons assume quick 180 at 35ish, going up 40 points at each
increment. (55ish, 85ish, 115ish, max) (there is an assumption of better
spells between 55 and 85, minor cantrip between 85 and 115 and major
between
115 and max)
ROF (swings per minute) for weapon types are:
UA: 35 (104 on max speed)
All other melee singlestrike: 33 (88 on max speed)
Doublestrike: 26 (52 hits/minute)
Triplestrike Slash: 23 (69 hits/minute)
Triplestrike Pierce: 20 (60 hits/minute)
Bow: 28
Alatl: 24
Crossbow: 21
Thrown Weapons w/****eld: 21
Any level 5-7 spell: 16
All of these assume NO LAG. All weapons can "seize up", as can spells of
any
kind. A fizzle (no equivalent for weapons) will cost a spell user 4
seconds.
A couple points before we go further:
War Magic. War alone depends heavily on armor value. The tables below show
war alone, appropriate for mages whose war skill outstrips their life
magic
vs a hard target. In practice though, most mages use life magic, and if a
mage can land both life and war and cast war 7 bolts and life 6 debuffs,
real world battles go like this: 130 health..dead in 4 sec. 325 health
dead
in 8 sec. 650 health, dead in 12 sec. Nothing a mage can do will speed
this
up. These tables do NOT include war economy or crits or imbued orbs...what
those factors will do is slide the "health" bar a bit...so maybe a high
level mage kills 150 health in 4 sec, 430 in 8 sec, 860 in 12 sec. Mages
don't really have a "fire faster but weaker" option, as level 5-7 spells
all
go off at the same speed. As most mobs have from 200-600 health, jacking
mage bolt damage further is unlikely to improve performance much unless
mob
health goes up too. Mages look better if mobs have thick armor and high
health. "Easy" mobs for melee/archer take as much work for a mage as the
harder mobs. This dynamic is why it is so hard to balance war with
physical
weapons, and why a PK (AL 1200) thinks war is overpowered, whereas a mage
who fights tuskers (AL 75 or so) thinks it is underpowered.
Life Magic: A decent rule of thumb is that a wand-weapon switch takes
about
1 swing. If a mage is doing vuln-war, you are getting in 3-4 swings or
shots, or an imperil-switch-single shot. Tactics such as debuffing until
all
mobs are "set up" and then using ring spells/one bolt per mob/one
arrow-swing per mob to quickly finish them can't be easily modeled in DoT.
Just have someone fight a pack that way and then with straight weapons and
see who does better. These charts don't help for that style of fighting.
Note that this plus the prior section means that if you can kill it in 3
swings, you'll beat a mage OR imp/switch/swing hybrid every time no matter
how powerful the war bolt or final imperiled weapon blow.
Full power on Melee weapons. Weapons do 1/3 damage at low power and do not
swing 3x as fast (except UA, barely)
That doesn't mean fast strokes don't have their place. If you kill a mob
in
3 hits but the third hit wastes 50 points of damage, you'd do better to
strike it with 2 hits at full power and one at reduced power. For many
mobs,
you may kill faster if you ease off the power bar to get faster animation,
or you can try to reduce power after you get a few full power whacks in.
This study does not consider this. It compares all weapons assuming that
you
wish to do the maximum damage possible.
UA normally goes higher power because stam cost is not so high, and
because
lag doesn't interfere as much with high power. But in lag free situations
you will probably put down a mob faster on low power simply because you
don't suffer from any wasted damage and because the horrible variance of
UA
evens out statistically. (if it takes 3 shots to kill something at high
power but the third shot wastes half its damage it will take less than 9
shots at min power. This means you'll kill it a little faster at min
power...with UA.
Bow vs Xbow (and other scenarios where you have faster windup vs higher
power per shot). DoT is not reliable if the mob goes down quickly. If a
more
powerful blow will get the mob dead in less swings/shots, then the slower
weapon will win, even if over time it would give way. If both weapons kill
in the same number of blows, the one with faster animation wins. How this
works in the field depends on the health and armor of the mobs. The
difference between Xbow and War (both slower, powerful weapons vs faster
weaopns) is that xbow fires and THEN suffers animation, whereas war
suffers
animation to get the first shot. Missile weapons win campfests simply
because even a melee weapon has to "swing" (and maybe charge) whereas the
delay in missile weapons is AFTER you fire the shot.
Historical DoT Summary
Weapon columns are

These summaries include only one AR example (A "Good" Sword), but AR will
perform in roughly the same way for other weapons. This is meant to
compare
directly to war, so you can see that AL affects AR less than War, but
gives
a similar wide range of performance
Dec YYYY columns show the WHOLE RANGE of physical weapons in Dec 1999, Dec
2000, Dec 2001 (at levels appropriate for those time periods) to show how
war and weapon interacted over time.

ranges for this weapon are ARMOR LEVEL ranges, not a GOOD vs BAD weapon
range like the other rows.

Number on the left is the DoT number. Table is sorted by this number
AL number on War, AR weapons and Phantom weapons is the Armor Level used
for

% figures are possible attack percent ranges with HS7 applied. Quid/Obs
dagger has 2 numbers (first for Quid, 2nd for Obsidian). Missile weapons
are

32%, quest weapons vary (mod is lower than loot and HS is often fixed and
unenchantable)

Phantom missile weapons have 2 entries "max" (firing max accuracy, as with
shooting at an Executor) and "min" (firing min accuracy, like in PK)
All Slayer weapons are only included vs their specific target, except for
Isp (x)bows which are superior to unimbued loot bows in raw damage, so
they
have 2 entries (one vs elemental, one normal)
FINAL DISCLAIMER: These results assume damage OVER TIME. If you are
one-shotting everything, what matters is how fast you get that one-shot
off,
look at the ROF numbers. If a faster but less damaging weapon puts you in
2-shot range, you'd do better with the "weaker" weapon. In most
situations,
the higher DoT weapon will find MORE mobs it is better on than a weaker
weapon. If you're leveling on a mob that isn't on that list though,
another
weapon may seem superior. Wrong damage type will influence results a lot.
Twinking will make 30-50 people look more powerful than they actually are.
High variance weapons do discouragingly low damage then make it all up on
a
crit (and this is even more dramatic with CB weapons)

Base Melee skill is 250. Base Missile skill also assumed to be 250, which
really is a "high 30s" thing, but simplified the distinction between
old-school 113 type weapons and modern 250 weild 110 weapons. Most imbued
weapons start with 110 or 113 base.
