MCMS & SPS - lots of manual configuration?

by "JJ" <jjjj@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Nov 14, 2005 at 09:21 PM

I suppose I am posting this out of frustration.....

Is it expected that one would have to do lots of manual configuration when

trying to install MCMS (eval) on a system with Sharepoint ****tal Server
already installed?

Unless I have installed it incorrectly (entirely possible, although it
doesn't seem like there are too many places to stray), things just either
don't seem to work or don't appear as they are supposed to in the docs or
various KB articles and posts I have read.

Examples:

- If I recall correctly, during the MCMS install, it asked me for a
virtual
directory to use for MCMS. I set up c:\inetpub\mcms and told it to use
that
directory - but later I found that it installed nothing there - the files
were put in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Content Management Services
anyway...
So I had to manually fix. Why ask if it is going to put them wherever it
wants?

- I've read several things that refer to a /NR folder, but it appears that

this is named /IIS_NR in my install - why is mine different? I didn't
change it.

- My current problem is that I cannot get Site Manager to work at all.
The
shortcut to Site Manager on the Start menu doesn't connect, even though I
type in the ****t number I selected (24580). If I try to get to it through

IE, either through just http://localhost:24580
or specifying the path to
the
login.asp script, errors like 403 and 500 appear. I found KB article
835248 - more manual steps. Is it expected that MCMS and SPS would ever
work without having to go through these steps? If not, why not have the
installer do them? Why put them in a KB article instead of the
installation
instructions? Anyway, so far, none of them have fixed it for me...

I hope the uninstaller works so I can try starting over....
