Can't render DAP in Design View or Page View

I can create a DAP in Design View - all works normally - but when I try to 
re-open a DAP in Design View the design window contains only HTML, e.g.  

"<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 ..." etc.  

Same with the Page View window.  

This also happens in my IE7 browser.  When opening the page, only the HTML

is rendered.

I've reinstalled MS Access, but the behavior has not changed.  Any advice
or 
insight welcome. Thanks!
